DeLuca's Chophouse

Our Friday night at the recently opened DeLuca's Chophouse in Boca Raton last month was some event.  Much different than expected.  We met our frequent dining pals for what proved to be a rather sensory experience.  I'm not even speaking of the food.  If you go, beware the main dining room which, at least the night we were there, sits under a giant spinning disco ball.   Two big screens side to side were showing GOODFELLAS.  The music, most of which was traditional Italian though plenty of old and new pop was also to be heard, was very loud.  It all felt very aggressive for fine dining.  Having a conversation led to post dinner throat lozenges.  I can only imagine how my hearing aid patients would fare.

I dug it.  My wife, not so much.  She has some issues with strobing and flashing lights, to say nothing of noisy environments.  But I have to admit I was taken aback.  Were we in a nightclub? I believe the tables are cleared in the later evenings for dancing.  But geez, guys, when we're trying to enjoy our (excellent) pesto gnocchi we'd prefer a slight din at best.

Our quartet also shared a mushroom risotto.  Fabulous.  It's clear these guys are serious in the kitchen.  The friendly owner came out to ask what we thought.   Once again, A and I shared a tomahawk steak, the fourth time within a year.  Forty-ounces of USDA heaven.  There were no leftovers this time.  We were all too stuffed for dessert.

A also brought a twenty year old (Spanish, but che diavolo) wine that the waiter attached to a decanter which allows proper aeration as it flows downward over a glass ball and into a funnel.  Part of the fun.

It being Boca, we were treated to some serious people watching.  I'm not saying some of the guests were "made", but you never know.

It is an upscale joint, very modern, yet has a vibe of Little Italy.  Maybe not too far removed from Umberto's Clam House?

Towards the end of the meal, we learned there is another part of the restaurant that is much quieter.  We'll hang there next time.
