Don Ramon
I typically favor the chicken or beef dishes. For the latter, you have to try the boliche (pot roast), the ropa vieja (shredded), or the picadillo (ground). The churrasco (flat steak) is probably my top choice. The pollo a la juliana (strips) hits the spot when I crave something chicken. Add yellow rice, black beans, and sweet plantains on the side and you're set. Several garlic shrimp and fish filet dinners are available, as is a gumbo of crab, clams, and more in a Spanish Creole sauce.
The restaurant was once a house, and has been redesigned with a slightly funky, very homey feel with local art on the walls and live music. There's a baby grand in a corner and a bar on the north side. Authentic everything. I've been there countless times over the years. Currently, there are three other locations, including another in WPB (a bit NW and while larger and attractive, not quite the same atmosphere) and one in Wellington and Royal Palm Beach (haven't been). Years ago, DR opened in the Northwood and downtown areas of West Palm, but for some reason(s) they didn't last.
The Dixie Highway spot is the one you need. The neighborhood just west of it is largely Hispanic and adds to the legitimacy. I grew up not far from there, and while the nostalgia associated with the area is always a draw, Don Ramon itself remains a timeless experience.
