Uchi

Back in September, my wife and I joined some friends, one of whom was celebrating his fiftieth, at Uchi, a very appealing Japanese restaurant in the Wynwood District of Miami.  On the Uber ride over, we were entertained by blocks and blocks of impressive graffiti.  One building sported a Millionaires' Row of Richie Rich and Scrooge McDuck illustrations.  The surrounding area is a bit sketchy, I believe largely consisting of Overtown, a long troubled area that was the scene of riots right before the Super Bowl in 1989.

Uchi, which also has locations in Texas, Colorado, and California and soon to arrive in N.Y.C., sits on NW 25th Street among several other cool joints.  A stroll is recommended.  Many had the same idea the night we were there.  The Uber was a wise choice as the traffic was fierce.

Our party of five shared several plates, which included sasami yaki (airline chicken in cocoanut milk and cilantro).and wagyu beef that comes out raw, which you cook on a hot rock and dip into ponzu sauce.  Great fun.  We had cold sake served in glasses mounted into wooden boxes (masus), deliberately poured to overflow, a tradition.   One of our companions had sanitation concerns and let me have his remnants.

High level cuisine.
